Introduction

The type of contact “to abut or to bond with” is relatively rare in J3, representing about 8% of the total.

     Since there are a number of major structures in J3, floors and accumulations against walls and, to a lesser extent, arranged stones in contact with one another contribute to the total of abutments. One example of bonding was found - special mortar was bonded to stones of the revetment wall.

Abuts

There were forty-seven examples where one feature abutted another. Accumulations against vertical surfaces occurs most often but an unusual example is a horizontal contact where a layer of reddish soil f65 abutted a compacted ash lens, f64.

Bonds

The sole example of bonding occurred when the semi-porous subsoil (baqaya) f80 was used as both mortar and plaster and incorporated into the construction of revetment wall, f11
