Film clip 4
Using a jackhammer in J3

Date September 5, 2005
Cameraman Diadin Mustapha
Duration 4.39 minutes

Summary While heavy mechanical tools are not generally employed on excavations, we were allowed to use a jackhammer in the case of a very hard surface, J3f76. This video clip shows the tool in use and the way in which the detritus was treated.
First segment A small test sounding has already been excavated by hand to probe the thickness of the layer to be removed with the jackhammer. Explanations are given to the operator as to how we intend to proceed.
Second segment The operator sets to work. Observers monitor the progress of the work. It is quite apparent how the soil is extremely hard, so that even the jackhammer proceeds very slowly.
Third segment A double sifting procedure ensures that we retrieve small items that have escaped the attention of the shovelmen. At the base of the dirt evacuation conveyor belt a large mesh sifter catches larger pieces, and at the top the dirt is dumped into a mechanical sifter with a 1 cm mesh.
