We did find two stones in close proximity to the corner but appear not to be related to the mudbrick wall.

C1 2001-07-23_L818LR.j sV To the North of a1, (outside the structure) we have a series of three floors coming out. The upper floor consists of pebble and sherd inclusions and can be associated with the stone foundation of the wall f114 found on the extreme North side of the locus (actually within the baulk/section). The floors are probably associated to an open area due to the irregular surface and slope of these floors (slopes west). Above the wall f7, which represents the northwest boundary of this outside area, we can see a 30cm reddish accumulation at the bottom of the wall f114, which belongs to phase 5c. To the west, there are a series of accumulations, which were cut by the pit f149 next to the northeast corner of a1. We assume that these accumulations still belong to phase 5b since they lie underneath the ashy layer f33 in k6. This layer also appears at the top of the East wall of a2, which is phase 5b.
C1 2001-07-25_L728LR.j lR In k1 we predict that this will be the most time consuming and slowest area to excavate since in the East section of A10 we see layers of sherd and pebble floors going down. We are leaving the wall in the Northwest corner f114 to see if it continues down.
C1 2001-07-26_L728LR.j lR In k1 we are removing another 15cm of a reddish brown soil throughout the area. In the Eastern side 50cm from the East baulk the soil has changed from a gray color to black likely the result of localized burning. A large amount of purple and green "kiln waste" chunks were found yesterday in the Northwest area next to the wall f114. In "kiln waste" I am referring to overfired material, which can be vitrified dung or clay. The soil is soft, ashy white in color with lots of burnt pottery and kiln waste. This localized firing pit continued 5-10cm down which exposed a chunky red layer below with blocky pieces of clay f173.

C1 2001-06-10_L630TR.j lR We opened up k2 today. The workmen have leveled off the NE section since the Tell has a slope in order to eventually make the whole locus one level. We did not collect the pottery from the first 10-15cm (topsoil) since it would most likely be out of context.
C1 2001-06-11_L630TR.j lR Continued removing ^ts on the NE side & area is still not leveled. A small pit was identified on the NE corner on the North baulk & was assigned f13- it later became apparent that it was an animal hole; a small amount of pottery was collected.

C1 2001-06-25_L630TR.j lR In k2 we cut a trench running North-South in the middle of the locus to determine the depth of the brickfall. The trench was 35cm below the rest of the locus on the East and West sides when ashy pockets started appearing. This could be the end of the brickfall with an ashy accumulation or just ashy pockets in the ^bf and the ^bf continues down. We stopped at this level and excavated the remainder of the locus. We did make the trench a separate locus k102

C1 2001-07-25_L728LR.j lR In k2 we are excavating the whole locus West of f132. This area contains large amounts of pottery in comparison to k6,k5,and k1, which is within a brown-gray matrix and is most likely the same pit as k6. The sherds contained no pattern and were not positioned in a way to suggest that it was a pavement or floor. Currently we are digging in f161 interface level with plans to change the feature tomorrow due to the pottery change. These layers are probably related to the sherd layers seen in the North section.
C1 2001-07-26_L728LR.j lR In k2, yesterday at the end of the day we defined the area with the large amount of pottery as a separate pit, a kind of "sherd pit" since a large amount of compacted pottery was isolated in that area. Currently this pit is located within the southwest corner but yesterday it extended throughout the locus thus the pottery from this feature is mixed with the feature above it. The sherd pit is f170 and was completely excavated today. We made a new feature for the accumulation around this pit and it is most likely the same matrix as the fill on top. This pit, although smaller, contained more sherds than the sherd pit in k6.
C1 2001-07-29_L728LR.j lR In k2 we cleaned all the sections to see the pit fill which shows a series of layers of gray f171, a sterile silty fine powder lense, and granular sandy pink lense with pottery and pebbles which reminds me of material which has been exposed to water for long periods of time where the heavier material, pebbles pottery and granular material sinks to the bottom and the silty fine powder lense forms at the top.

The ceramic vessel i2 is still in the ground and is presumed that we still have another 15-20cm left to excavate until we reach the base of the vessel. C1 2001-07-25_L728LR.j lR In k5, we have another pit under a1. We have removed all of a1 except for the portion within the North baulk. The material under this aggregate is the interface between accumulation of the structure and the beginning of the pit, which is also seen in A12 North section.
C1 2001-07-26_L728LR.j lR In k5 we see a pottery lense, which is quite thick in section, and this might have been the same case in k2 if it was seen in section. In k5 we are still excavating the pit and are coming down on the sherd lense f178, which we are, using black garbage bags since there is too much pottery to collect it in the normal sherd bags. Since we know that all the pottery was dumped at one time, there is no need to separate the q-lots and thus garbage bags will hold the pottery until they are analyzed. A large stone was left pedestaled in the Western area of the locus a few centimeters above the pottery lense. This stone is quite large and will probably take several hours to remove. In the East section of k5 reddish brown bricks are visible but they are too scattered to form a wall. Something separates the two pits in k6,k5 and it is located within the baulk. Is it possible that a retaining mud brick structure lies in the baulk?

We are calling the material below a2 a pit, the same pit that we see in A12 North section that extends to the East in A15. This material f153 contains approx 20cm of interface that changed to gray ashy fill.
C1 2001-07-26_L728LR.j lR In k6, the section has been cleaned and scraped and we can see the interface between house accumulation from a2 and the beginning of the pit, which forms a nice clear line. The house accumulation f153 is a reddish brown color that extends about 20cm below the bricks with a thin band of bright orange-red clay under this (approx 3cm thick). This band extends through the North baulk into k2 area, which leads us to believe that this is the same pit. Under this thin band is a unified gray that we have referred to as pit fill f157.
C1 2001-07-28_L728LR.j lR In k6, we noticed at the end of the day on Thursday that more red was appearing in the western section. We had noticed earlier that the fill material was mixed with small pieces of reddish clay and made it a new feature f157. Now the material is completely red clay and after scraping the section, we noticed distinct clear brick lines, red bricks with brown mortar and assigned it f181 wall. A plaster line is also visible in section. The bricks do not hold together but resemble moist clay, making it difficult to find the face. It was not until we cut back the section that we could see these brick lines. These bricks are running north south, east of the west baulk. In the western area a tannur was found f180 in the gray fill of the pit and appears it was cut by the pit a13. The eastern area contains ash and is probably still pit fill while the western area is reddish. In k6 north section the accumulation from a2 is seen very nicely which forms a bowl. The gray underneath forms bands of lighter gray sloping west to east with the western portion higher. Alternating layers of gray are seen, light gray, dark, light, dark forming a bowl shape towards the east. If this is a pit, then it is quite large for it must extend the same length to the east making the pit almost 10 meters in diameter.

This is probably the end of the pit as we start a new layer seen in A12 section, a red layer f190. We met with gB today to discuss the phases, and he suggested that the fill we are excavating in k6,k5,and k2 is not a pit but large hollows created by depressions in the palace that conditioned the topography which then was used as dumps. So they were not cut, but natural in a sense that they occurred naturally after the palace collapsed. These hollows provided a ground for dumping which was filled up with 5a material but in the lower end of the hallow we find strata 4 material underneath. This level may be the strata to which the tannur f180 and the accumulation around it belong to. fAB mentioned that the tannur may be related to the tannur found in A12 which was on top of the palace wall.

These walls in k108 make the locus somewhat narrow.

We decided to pound in a metal shish (nail) to see if there are stones underneath and found that the shish hit something hard. The metal shish was pounded in at the elevation of 8498 and we believe will hit something in the next 25-30 cm.
C1 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr In k108 we removed portions of the Western red bricky material to make the Western area straight since we could not identify any clear brick lines to define it as a wall. A ceramic vessel was found in the North portion of k108 in the Western area. The vessel is a black over- fired jar i49 and is in poor state of preservation.
C1 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr In the Western portion of k108, there is red clay protruding approximately 60cm East of the Western baulk. We have interpreted this material as bricks since a few mortar and white plaster lines are visible. This red bricky material is in poor state of preservation making boundary definition difficult. In any case, we have decided to leave this material since it may be the remains of a phase 3 wall, or wall collapse. While excavating the pit fill, which covers the majority of this locus, we encountered the cut of a13. We also found a thin hard clay layer covering the bottom surface of the locus. We removed this hard clay layer and thought we hit stones (of the courtyard) but resulted in discovering baked bricks. The situation is still unclear and we need to uncover the rest of the locus to understand these bricks and there relationship to the courtyard.
C1 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr In the northern portion of k108 we hit stone pavement at elevation 8491, the brick pavement is at 8470 and to the south the stone pavement is at 8503. The stone pavement continues to slope south to north and again down from east to west since k108 is higher than k109. In the south east part of k108, the pot smash has been removed item 48 but some of the pot extends into the baulk and has been left in place. we decided to remove the pot smash that sat on top of the stone pavement since it would most likely have been further damaged and lost if left in place.
C1 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr We have made three new loci to facilitate digging and q-lot assignment. Locus k108 includes k2, and k6; locus k109 includes the Northern portion of k1; and locus k110 includes the Southern portion of k1, k5 and the Northern baulk of k5.
C1 2001-08-22_L822LR.j lR On the west side of k108 in the west baulk we have brick-like material running north to south and these two bricks maybe associated with this material. We will not know until this baulk is excavated which we plan to do in controlled layers.
C1 2001-09-02_L903LR.j lR For the past few days we have been excavating small portions of k108 primarily the western baulk. Today we began to remove the long pillar of material located in the eastern baulk that was formed in the beginning by a2, which we left a small 150cm x 50cm rectangular hump on the section. This section measures approx three meters and contains gray layers of the pit a13 found throughout the entire area of k108.
C1 2002-09-02_-MX12-99.j lR We started removing the protruding section of k108 on the eastern section. This piece was left when we removed a2 at the top and eventually created a long pillar to the south side. The section measures approx. 150cm x 50cm in width and will be especially useful for pottery analysis since it gives us a sampling from the top of the pit to the bottom (including red material that was cut by the pit). We began to excavate the pillar at the top by removing the interface layer between house accumulation of a2 and pit fill. Since the upper area of the pit is significantly higher than the stone pavement of k108, excavation must be proceeded very slowly with a big pick working down using a ladder. We expect this work to continue for the next few days.
C3 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr We have two possible situations, one that the fired bricks are an earlier phase, a pavement under the palace or that the fired bricks are part of a drainage system since it is in line with the drain found in A13, and may continue underneath the eastern portion of the stone pavement.
C4 2001-09-02_L903LR.j lR we excavated the east baulk pillar by layers. The first feature is the interface between the accumulation from the phase 5b houses from a2 and a11 and the beginning of the pit. The first 30 cm contains a reddish compact layer with the brick foundations seen in the section. This layer serves as a seal between phase 5b and earlier Khabur. The next layer contains soft ashy fill 83 cm in thickness. This material is darker than the rest of the material in the pillar and contians chunks of reddish pink clay, and flakes of charcoal a clear line between this feature and the one below is marked by a thin band of pottery. The next layer was removed which was called an interface layer between the ashy accumulation and the more compact light gray underneath. The remaining material was seperated not by layers since it appears that the matrix is the same, but by 30cm increments to keep the pottery seperate. We are using the pillar as a good documentation of the stratigraphy of the pit and keeping careful seperation between each layer by ensuring that the area is cleaned and all pottery collected before proceeding to the next layer. The pillar was excavated by one person at a time using a ladder and a big pick. The person excavating the pillar was directed by someone below as to when the layer changed. The pillar was then scrapped and all the pottery collected with the khabur sherds seperated.
C99 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr (continue) After 15 cm down the material became browner and 35 cm down we came down on a hard layer of clay, almost fired which was only 5-6 cm in thickness. this material chunked off with the brown material making it difficult to expose the area in its entirety with this clay. We excavated the area in some cases mixing both the brown and the clay together and underneath we hit something hard which we first interpreted as stone since this was the prediction of the courtyard. After cleaning the area we noticed that the material was not stone but fired bricks f194. The bricks are a pink and yellow color and cover the bottom of the circle with a chunky clay material running north-south in the east. This may be a possible damaged area by the pit cut f189. After excavating the circle in its entirety we noticed large stones forming the same shape as the cut, circular. We then decided to excavate in the southern portion of k108 since we can follow the stones from the pavement in the courtyard to better understand the relationship between the fired bricks and the stone pavement. What we found was that the stones sit on top of the bricks and we have hypothesized that the stones were cut by the pit since the stones from the pavement form a circular shape and the bricks are below.
C99 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr In the western portion of k108 we have left the red material which protrudes approximately 60 cm east of the western baulk, which we have interpreted as bricks since a few mortar lines and a few white plaster lines have been identified. This red bricky material is difficult to define due to its poor state of preservation and we have left this material to the west incase it is a phase 3 wall. We have also pedastooled the tannur f180 located in the south east corner of k108 and currently are 260 cm down from the beginning of the pit a13. While excavating inside k108 we noticed a clear line forming a circular pattern that we have defined as the cut of the pit/hallow a13. This cut links all the material in former k2 and k6 below a11, and a2 together since it all belongs to the same pit. This cut is marked very well by a hard compacted reddish brown material that forms no brick shapes just a massive accumulation measuring approximately 50 cm down. The material inside the circle (the fill) peels away easily from the red material and also curves slightly in at the base. The fill inside the circle is gray and brown, softer and full of pottery and bones. We proceeded to excavate the fill first f183.
C99 2001-08-02_L815LR.j lr The jar was sitting upright in this bricky red material and was photographed then removed. It was triangulated and removed in pieces since it is so over-fired that it fell apart instantaneously. While removing the vessel small bones were noticed inside which may belong to an infant or a small animal. These remains are labeled as i50. The bones and jar have been defined as a burial and treated as one.

C1 2001-08-22_L822LR.j lR We reopened k110 today after a twenty day break in order to expose the entire stone pavement a12 which was our initial goal. The north baulk of k110 was removed today and we will continue to excavate the square without a baulk since the north baulk of k109 lays only 150cm north and would serve the same purpose as k110 north baulk. After the baulk was removed (only 25 cm) we began to straighten the square since the northern end forms a hump. In straightening the area we came down of f199, a tannur sitting on a white plaster floor. The tannur is large in diameter, 90cm and has a smooth surface on both the inside and out. All that remains of the tannur is the base and the gray fill inside which contains small pieces of burned bone, and kiln waste. The white plaster floor is located on the south and east of the tannur but does not appear to continue very far and looks cut by a pit. In the northeast next in the east baulk two bricks were found lying onto of each other, fAB cleaned the area and noticed that a gray band runs underneath the bricks eliminating the possibility of it being a wall. On the west side of k108 in the west baulk we have brick-like material running north to south and these two bricks maybe associated with this material. We will not know until this baulk is excavated which we plan to do in controlled layers.

The area was cleaned which revealed vertical bricks in a soft sandy matrix, which we labeled as a pit f217, possibly a burial. This pit did turn out to be a burial, labeled a15.

This small square belonged to A10 and was left unexcavated since it was not understood at the time. This area is in poor condition since it has been left unexcavated and exposed to the elements for a number of years.
C1 2002-09-07_M907LR.j MISSING This locus was not excavated today but was scraped thoroughly then brushed to expose a clean surface in which to decide a strategy for tomorrow. The north section of this area is A10 North section and since it has not been excavated since 1999 the section is heavily weathered. The section once cleaned revealed a large dark gray ash pit underneath Khabur structures. The ashy pit goes all the way down until it stops and the soil becomes an orange brown approx 50 cm from the level that the locus is at. The surface of these loci shows traces of dark gray ash in layers, which may be a continuation of the A10 pit and mixed with the orange brown soil.

C1 2002-09-07_M907LR.j MISSING Last season we saw lines that appeared to form a wall of some sort; f249, in this area. We began by removing 10cm from the area to see if we could expose the face of the wall. The wall shows no clear brick faces but is harder than the material around it making it a possible "pize" wall or a simple mud wall. The entire surface that was excavated was leveled, scraped, and cleaned.
C1 2002-09-09_-MX12-99.j lR The wall f249 was removed today since we could not find any clear faces and appeared to be constructed of mud. It was relayed in then removed.
C1 2002-09-19_M919LR.j lR Yesterday 10cm of a reddish layer was removed throughout the entire locus. While removing this layer, several large pottery pieces were uncovered immediately north of a16 burial from last season. These ceramic pieces presumably come from one vessel, likely a pot smash i140 which contains no rim nor base and consists of large thick fragments of pottery lying with the outside face lying down exposing the inside of the vessel. To the east of the pot smash i140 a burning area f317 was noticed by fAB. The area shows bright red bricks, gray ash, black ash, and light gray bricky material mixed together. The colors are quite vivid and sharp when scraped with the trowel but lose their brightness when brushed. This burnt area appears localized only within k202 crossing into k203 and we plan to leave this feature in the case that this is a destruction layer and covers the entire area above the stones. The stone pavement a12 found in k109 shows several stones with black stains on them (the stones to the far west) and looks like bitumen. It is interesting to note that the burnt area f317 lies next to these stones and may be the reason why they are darkened. We will see if this burnt layer continues to the stone pavement.

We expected the stones to continue until the end of our west section primarily because the trench k109 yielded stones throughout the area. The stones end roughly at the same point but are not regular in line suggesting that they were removed at a later date. Next season we plan to excavate the material abutting the stone pavement to the east, which may possibly yield stones at a lower level like the two stones under f206.

We decided to stop excavating the area and concentrate on scraping and cleaning the surface. The southern cut of the section was also shaved back 10cm, which exposed a fresh section with clear sloping lines that matched the surface layers (a photograph was taken of this v94). From plan view one can see the top lines of these layers seen in the south section.

The area was then cleaned and several bricks were noticed on the surface along with the circular lines that were noticed last season, which defined f250. The bricks are inside this circular pattern on the western end. This may be another burial.

One of the small pits is seen in the south section and only goes down 5-10 cm. The bricks are located in northeast area and contains several gray bricks and orange bricks. The bricks do not form a line or pattern and may be a burial. The pits and the bricks have not been assigned feature numbers.
C1 2002-09-11_-MX12-99.j lR 5-7 cm was removed from f294 which spreads throughout the locus. Removal began in the north end extending south with a reference view from the burial which cut the material creating a section. South of the burial a19 a very nice seal impression was recovered i108. This contains an impression of a seated figure on a chair wearing a hat and has been sent to conservation for cleaning. Two photographs were taken, one with the item in place another with the relay tag.

C1 2002-09-09_-MX12-99.j lR Today we continued to remove the ashy pit fill found in this "pillar". This pit fill has a very clear boundary that is marked by a dark gray ashy layer that slopes down making the containment of this feature easy. Below this pit fill f280 is the accumulation that was cut by the pit. This accumulation contains the tannur f180 and the layers associated with it. When scraping the area to make sure that the entire pit fill was excavated a small pit was discovered in the eastern side of the locus. The matrix consisted of a jumble of pottery sherds and may be a continuation of the pit fill f280 or a separate pit that cuts into f283. This eastern side was given a separate feature number f284 which contains this mixture of pit and accumulation that went down approx 30 cm. We assume that this feature is contaminated and decided not to keep the pottery unless something significant was found. We did find one object a long curved piece of clay which is the only element associated with this feature. Once the area was leveled below f284 and f283 we noticed that the matrix again changed- the western side retained a bright orange color while the eastern side a grayish tone. We decided to keep these areas separate and the orangish material remained f283 while the gray was assigned f287. Currently only 20-30 cm remain until the red f190.
