.bk J01 .fl Qx03ms.j .fd daily journal Qx03 .ed Qx03 .ei mS .rd Qx03 .ri mS -sg after meeting with gB, fAB, mL, lC and mS we decided to finish excavations for the season. We are still about one meter above the plaza level but the pebble surfaces along the top of the escarpment are taking a long time to excavate. We discussed digging a trench one meter wide down to the plaza level but we decided against this because we would prefer to open the entire area rather than just a strip. It is a very important area and we want to make sure we don't miss anything by digging in a hurry or in a limited space. Ceasing excavation will also allow us to spend more time working on the records because we will leave Mozan in nine days. There are some items we do not understand such as f239 the brown mudflow and what function it served or what it's full extent is, but we have a good starting point for excavation next season. We will clean well k103 in front of the wall to have a complete picture of the escarpment at this point. We will also finish the third staircase in k118. -dy decided that today will be the final day of full excavations in J1 because we cannot realistically reach the level of the plaza in the time left. Most of the day was spent excavating f238 in k117 and cleaning sections in k103, k117 and scoring other sections to show well the horizontal layers above. k 117 dy continued exposing another layer of f238 which continues to slope down to the south and it seems, a little to the west. It remains full of sherds, stones and bones. We don't have any dating info from mKB as yet. The lowest point of f138 in the SW corner is 8617, still a meter above the plaza level and just over half a meter below the bottom of the wall. We looked at f239 and still are not clear on it's extent or function. It may be a leveling at the top of the escarpment in the Khabur period, but we probably will not know it this season. k 103 dy cut back the southern section which is below f239 in k117. We had thought this was an ashy layer, but the ash, f241, is not as thick as we had thought it would be and there is another layer of brown material which is brown and bricky but different from f239 above it. Again, we are not clear on what is going on in this area. We will clean the backfill from this locus tomorrow and if we can get any more information.
