Recovery/Assignment

Daily notes about recovery of elements 2005-08-29 mS declared this locus and began excavation here today. This is part of k14 and k24. Continued using f163. It was hard and very compacted and slow going today. Took photograph of f185 a floating stone. It does not appear to be connected purposefully to the wall in any way. It was relayed and will be removed this week. [Input: P828MS1.j]
2005-08-31 mS continued excavations here. Declared f188 which are two large stones on the northern edge of this locus. We have called this a feature because there is the possibility they may be linked to the line of stones running east-west in k23 and along the northern edge of k106, although this is unclear at the moment. This is one question we hope to answer with focused excavation in this area. [Input: P828MS1.j]
2005-09-01 mS finished removing the eastern baulk adjacent to k108, and continued going down in the rest of the locus. We finished the day about 10-15cm higher than the elevation in k106, the original column. When we are at this elevation, about 8800, we will create a new locus. Nothing remarkable about the soil in this accumulation, f163, today. Continues to be consistent with the accumulations excavated in k106. Cut back accumulation under the stones f188 which was declared today. We have named this accumulation f190. A primary reason for this cutback was to determine whether these stones were highly founded or were a wall. They are highly founded and we found Mitanni sherds in the accumulation that the stones rest on. These may be random although seemingly in line with the stones to the east, f168 and f169. The brown packing, f189 also has no contact with these stones. We will remove f188 on Saturday. [Input: P901MS.j]
2005-09-03 mS reached the level of k106, 8800. We declared f191 which is a different accumulation from f163, more soft and brown, and is the same as f184 in k106. We are closing this locus at this point. [Input: P903MS.j]
2005-09-04 mS removed the remainder of f190, the gray accumulation under the larger stones of f188. This accumulation abuts the wall f188 and sits on f193. Found the bottom of the wall f188 on this side. It seems to sit on the bekiyah surface, f193. This makes us think this may be a 3rd mil wall which was maintained later. This is not clear yet however. We are continuing the step and will cut back f192 and f193 to one meter west of the baulk and cut it all to the wall. Tomorrow we will begin going down in the accumulation in front of the wall, f72, also called a3, to see how far down the wall extends. [Input: P904MS.j]
