After removing the dirt from the last jackhammer run in k103, we released five workmen to faB for deployment in cleaning the palace excavations. The remaining four workmen cut sections and generally cleaned the unit in preparation for photography and drawing. After breakfast, all but one workment were deployed to cleanup the palace excavations. -sf jW spent most of the morning before breakfast at home processing data and reviewing stratigraphy. After breakfast, gM spent the rest of the day at home processing objects and rE spent the rest of the day at home working on a project for gB. -sg At the beginning of the day, gB determined that the seasonal goals of the unit had been accomplished in that we had exposed both sides of the monumental wall, f11, and in the process determined how it had been built. We exposed a section of a third millennium terrace, f50, that led from wall, f11, to the BA temple at the top of the mound. We also found the likely end of the second millennium apron, f10, above wall, f11, and determined that the plaza to the south of the wall was devoid of buildings or other substantial structures. As a result no more excavations will be needed in J3 this season. -sg At the end of the day gB and jW decided that we will continue to prepare the sections in k103 for drawing and photography and that we will finish tracing the top of the bakhia surface of the temple terrace, f50, in k12. About four workmen will be needed for this effort. k 103 dy We began to cut and trim sections in preparation for final photographs and drawing. At gB's direction, we left the elevator and a small quantity of accumulation in the locus to possibly be used for a demonstration of the dirt removal process to attendees of the conference to outfit the new museum in Hassake. k 104 dy We cleaned all sections in k104 and 105 to prepare for final photography and the drawing of sections. k 12 dy Along the west edge of the locus we began to remove the accumulation, f38, that was below the N-S line of stones, f75, to trace the top bakhia surface of the terrace, f50, downslope to the monumental wall, f11. In the process we uncovered two more large stones, f78, and f79 that had underlain f75. These stones were relayed and photographed in anticipation of removal on P907. f 76 df pv ns A preliminary examination of the pottery in the field by jW indicated that identifiable sherds were from the Mitanni period. H99 It was the impression of jW that this pavement was intentionally laid over a wide area for a purpose as yet to be determined. No gravel and little sand has been encountered in other accumulations, layers, and pavements in other loci or elevations in unit J3.
