With the approval of faB, Muhammad Kher departed at 1100. Surveyor assistant, Hussein, worked in the unit as a pick man after breakfast. During the last hour, deployed the support members in a general cleanup of the area around the unit. -sf Student Zuzan did not report for work. After breakfast, rE remained at home preparing for an examination. -eq Removed the dirt elevator from k12 so that we could excavate the entirety of accumulation, f38, overlaying bakhia terrace, f50. No impact on overall removal because we were doing fine work in the entire unit which produced little back dirt. f 11 H99 The massive perimeter wall of the BA temple mound, in locus k101, was constructed in at least two phases. The first, believed to have been constructed in the third millennium consists of large, rough, stones laid with a mud and small stone mortar. The second, believed to have been constructed in the second millennium consists of large stones, cut into blocks, and laid atop packing, f42, which seems to have been spread over the third millennium wall. The part of the south face which we see consists of two courses of stones with a stone and mud mortar fill. The stones appear to be about 25cm thick, and seem to be laid form a smoother weather surface than the larger, rough stones behind them to the north. dy Completed the exposure of the south face of monumental wall, f11, to a depth of about 50 cm, where a hard, ashy accumulation of unkown depth abuts it. nc Continued to carefully excavate the relationship between the monumental wall, f11, and a mass of large stones, f39, f40, that are adjacent on its south side. The issue is whether they form a buttress at a turn in the wall or whether they are part of a large group of fallen stones, either from the second millennium additions to the wall or from some other structure higher on the temple mound. When the accumulation surrounding the stones, f47, was completely removed, we found the stones neither abutted or bonded with the wall. H2 We conclude that the stones were carried down from above at some time later than the second millennium additions to wall, f11, were made. This is confirmed by the discovery of a large "dent" in the hard, gray, ashy accumulation, f43, which seals lower accumulations where the largest stone, f40, fell. f 50 H2 A surface, of unknown depth, of "bakhia", the local virgin soil which consists of reddish clay with white inclusions extending from k102 south into k12. It gives every indication of being the third millennium surface of the temple mound that extended from the monumental wall, f11, up to the BA temple. H99 Because the temple mound is so far above the level of the surrounding ground, this bakhia must have been dug elsewhere and carried up to the temple mound for application on a prepared surface. dy We are carfully exposing this surface south and down to the north face of wall, f11, to which we expect it abuts. f 38 dy We are excavating carefully the this accumulation, f38, which covers the bakhia surface of the terrace, f50, directly underneath. Analysis of the sherds may give us clues as to when this part of the temple complex was in use and then abandoned or changed.
