There is a slight upslope from south to north to the top of a mound upon which was built a series of temples (BA). The vegetation is typical of the entire site - weeds with large, deep roots not eaten by grazing caprids. It was originally anticipated that these loci would be used for a deep sounding to explore the methodology used to construct the monumental wall which defines the outer extent of the mound, but we later decided to excavate closer to the wall. Therefore these loci were never excavated. 2a m S gk01,11,21,12,13,100 Sub-view to the south showing condition of loci k13 and k100 prior to the planned start of excavation, as well as their relationship to loci k11 and k12 which straddled the monumental wall and were excavated. 2b t S gk12,100 View showing condition of locus k100 prior to its planned excavation. Locus k12 appears at the top of the photo which was taken soon after excavation began. 3 N gk12 gm4007,3931,3932 gf2,3,4,5,6,20,21,41 View of the first non-soil features exposed after the removal of a thin layer of topsoil from k12. It consists of a tannur, f3, an associated working surface, f4 and five large floating stones, f5,f6,f20,f21,f41. All were found in a matrix of loess, f2. On the template are plotted survey markers m4007, m3931, and m3932 which provide a geo-reference for the photograph. 3a w E gk12 gf2,3,4,5,6 Sub-view to the east, highlighting the relationship of the German exploratory trench, the north edge of the monumental wall apron and the excavated features in k12. 3b m S gk12 gf2,3,4,5,6,20,21 Sub-view to the south showing the relationship between the working surface, f4, and the two floating stones, f5, f6. The dirt-covered tops of more floating stones, f20, f21, can be seen in the lower right-hand corner. 3c t W gk12 gf2,3,6 Sub-view to the west, highlighting the tannur, f3, whose rim is just beginning to be exposed along the west baulk. Due to the shallow depth of the tannur we presume that it was used during a post-abandonment late period of scattered occupation. .rd P804 .ri rE 4 NW gk12 gf2,3,4,5,6,20,21,45 View of tannur, f3, probably constructed during scattered occupation, at a point in the excavtion where it was about half exposed. 4a t S gf3 Closeup of tannur, f3. 5 WSW gk12 gf3,4,6,20,21 View of the excavated tannur, f3. Also shown are a related working surface, f4, and three floating stones, f6,f20,21. 5a w W gk11,12,13 gf3 Sub-view of excavated tannur, f3, as seen along the north edge of a wall apron ,f10, that was exposed during the course of excavation by a German team several seasons ago. closeup of tannur .rd P807 .ri gM 6 N gk21,22,23 View showing condition of loci k21,22,23 prior to excavation. Although they were laid out by the surveyor, they were not excavated during this season (2005-P) due to higher priority work, such as the excavation of k103 to the south. q 3 p 2 12 r2 400 S 400 W m3930 104 137 4 p 2 12 r2 400 S 400 W m3932 66 132 5 p 3 12 r9 220 N 400 E m3930 71 132 6 p 8 11 SE corner 400 N 400W m3936 -73 0 .rd P804 .ri rE 7 p 9 101 r29 497 N 400 W m3931 27 142 8 i 3 12 r9 m3930 71 132 sample 9 i 3 12 r11 m3930 71 132 tannur 10 p, b 3 12 r10 m3930 71 132 11 p 9 101 r29 500 N 400 E m3931 27 142 .rd P806 .ri gM 12 p, b 9 101 r30 300 S 400 E m3624 42 151 13 p 9 101 r30 300 S 400 E m3624 42 151 .rd P807 .ri gM 14 p 13 101 r32 300 S 400 E m3624 66 139 15 p 13 101 r32 300 S 400 E m3624 66 139 16 p, b 9 101 r30 300 S 400 E m3624 42 151 q 5.1 sm black sample of burnt soil outside the tannor 5.2 ta pale brown tannor fragments 6.1 la 0.2 1.5 0.9 ob black little piece of obsidian blade 5.3 sm black carbonized chickpea .rd P806 .ri gM 10.1 sm samples taken from outside tannur 11.1 la 4 5 3 li brown less than a half mace head 11.2 la 1.5 3 1 li brown flint core .ri rE 12.1 la 11 16 6 li pale brown fragment of door socket or quern 13.1 la 4.2 3.5 1 li black lithic tool, polished 13.2 la 2.6 0.6 0.3 ob black fragment of obsidian blade .rd P807 .ri rE 16.1 ca cl brown 3 pcs of clay objects, maybe sling balls? 15.1 cl cl brown 3 clay lumps 15.2 bd 0.6 1.6 li light gray small lithic bead 16.2 bd 0.5 1.6 li light gray small bead 15.3 la 3.5 9.5 6 li black lithic artifact 16.3 sm green 2 pcs of waste from pottery making
