text description of view | 2005-8-02 | gM | View showing condition of locus k12 prior to excavation. There is a slight upslope from south to north to the top of a mound upon which was built a series of temples (BA). The vegetation is typical of the entire site - weeds with large, deep roots not eaten by grazing caprids. Along the north baulk there is a berm used to divert runoff from winter rains away from the excavation. | [Input File: P802gM1.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-04 | rE | View showing condition of loci, k13 and k100 prior to the planned start of its excavation. There is a slight upslope from south to north to the top of a mound upon which was built a series of temples (BA). The vegetation is typical of the entire site - weeds with large, deep roots not eaten by grazing caprids. It was originally anticipated that these loci would be used for a deep sounding to explore the methodology used to construct the monumental wall which defines the outer extent of the mound, but we later decided to excavate closer to the wall. Therefore these loci were never excavated. | [Input File: P807gM.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-15 | rE | This subview, taken from nearly overhead shows the major stone work of the monumental wall, f11, and the apron, f10. At this point we were in the process of trying to determine which of the large limestone blocks were part of the walls and which were "floating" ones were residue from deteriorated strutures that had washed down from higher in the slope. The vertical south face of f11 was just being exposed and can be seen in the lower left part of the photo. There is a group of large limestone blocks, f39, f40, in the bottom center of the photo which may be a buttress. | [Input File: P823gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-16 | rE | This view illustrates the relationship between the apron stones, k10, in k101, and the structures to the east and south. Several years ago, a German team excavated an E-W trench to the east of k12/k101 which revealed a line of large limestone blocks extending along the south baulk of their trench. This line of stones matches the north edge of apron stones, f10 in J03k101. This series of views also provides evidence to resolve the issue of whether the apron, f10, was built as a part of the monumental wall, f11, in Phase 1 (ED III) or was added subsequently as decoration in Phase 5 (Khabur) or 6 (Mittani). | [Input File: P823gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-16 | rE | This sub-view of the east section of k12 and extending into k101, best shows the stratigraphy associated with the apron stones towards E section. It appears as if the stones were laid on top of accumulation, f33, which overlays fill, f34, the top level of material datable to Phase 1. Note that the scoring that separated f33 and f31 in the vicinity of the vertical reference stick is in error. The photo clearly shows that f33 contines to angle upward to the north crossing the stick at the red/white boundary rather than in the middle of the red band. The photo also shows that the stones of the south edge of the apron, f10, are higher than the stones of the north edge of the monumental wall, f11. Furhermore, the edge stones do not abut. | [Input File: P823gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-25 | rE | This series of views, taken after the monumental wall, f11, and apron, f10 were fully excavated, allows us to evaluate their extent after the last modifications were made, probably in Phase 5, the Mittani period. From this photograph, it appears as if the large limestone blocks f66, f67, and f68 were part of the wall prior to abandonment. They were set in, but not covered with plaster-like mud. They appear to be on the northernmost of three E-W lines of similar blocks that form the extant top of the wall. They were later removed for safety reasons as we excavated just to the north of them to explore how the wall was constructed. The three subviews are all taken looking south towards the north face of the wall and illustrate how the most intact of several layers of bakhia, f50, sealed the surface extending from the wall up to the temple BA. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-25 | rE | This sub-view shows the bakhia layer, f50. Although at first we thought that it was the top surface of the temple mound, this photo illustrates that it abuts the wall about 50cm. below the top, and therefore must be an intermediate surface, perhaps marking the end of seasonal construction. Several more layers of fill would have been subsequently placed above f50 and another layer of bakhia, bricks and stones would have marked the true top. This photo shows that the N-S line of limestone blocks, f72, were laid atop the highest layer of fill, f34, that we can positively associate with the temple mound. It is possible that they were a part of the apron system, f10. One can also see the limestone blocks, f66-68, hanging over the north edge of the wall, necessitating their removal when we began to excavate directly below them. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-27 | jW | The excavation of the typolgical column moved from k102, the north baulk of k12, to k104, located just north of the north face of the monumental wall, f11. The first extant layer of bakhia that we encountered, f50, covered all of k12. (We postulate that there was a higher layer atop fills f34, f38, and f42 that had all but eroded away after abandonment.) As f50 was being removed from the 2m x 2m locus of k104, underneath we encountered a layer of compacted fill, f57, atop another thin layer of bakiah, f58. This view shows that f58 extended throughout the locus, sloping down from north to south following the shape of the temple BA mound. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

First, parts of two thin layers of bakhia, f89, apparently imbedded in compacted fill, f57, and seen in the right center of the photo, show a "reverse slope" upward to the south. Second, a wedge of fill, f92, and seen in the lower right part of the photo, appears above the full bakhia layer, f58. Although we do not know its purpose, it could be part of a continuing project to raise the level of the entire wall. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-31 | gM | This photograph helps resolve several issues with the burial, a1. First, one can see that the remains sit in compacted fill, f59, strongly indicating that the burial was made at the same time the temple mound was being constructed. There is no shaft or cut that might indicate that the burial occured later in time. Second, the body is in a fully flexed position. Third, a stone tool, i8, probably belonging to the deceased is located direcly under the innominate bone. Fourth, an extensive layer of compacted ash, f64, was in place before the burial was accomplished and this layer was covered by, compacted fill, f59, in which the body sits. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-8-31 | gM | This view shows part of the complex nature of compacted fill, f64, and its relationship with the compacted fill, f59, which covered the burial, a1. This complexity was missed during the first phases of excavation. We noted an ashy component to the NW corner of the locus while excavating f59, but did not immediately assign it a separare feature number. As one can see in the north baulk there is a clear demarkation between the two. The human skeleton is shown, clearly sitting in f59. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

These stones were probably a part of the top layer of the last reconstructed version of the monumental wall, f11. text description of view | 2005-9-03 | gM | In order to explore the nature of the interface between the monumental wall, f11, and the material behind it in the few days of excavation remaining in season MZ18, we dug only in the south half of k104, designating the "reduced" locus k105. This view shows the result of the first day's excavation. On the right side one can see the north face of f11, whose stones are covered with a layer of bakhia, f80, a local virgin soil, to regulate the flow of water from the layers in the mound behind to the fully exposed south face. We assume that the bakhia allows water to trickle through, thus assuring that the mud mortar between the stones of the wall does not wash away. On the left of the photo, one can see a vertical layer of compacted fill, f70, in which is imbedded several horizontal lenses of bricky material, f69. | [Input File: P904gM5.j]

text description of view | 2005-9-05 | gM | As the excavation of locus k12 progressed, a large limestone block, f35, was uncovered along the west baulk. Later, it was found to be the northernmost of a N-S row of seven such stones, f72, the subject of this view.. The stones were all at an elevation above the top layer of compacted fill, f34, which we believe formed the surface of the BA temple mound, which was bounded on its outer periphery by the monumental stone wall, f11. It is unlikely that this row of stones was deposited naturally, but its function is unclear. The most likely explanation is that it somehow formed the western boundary of the apron, f10, which was added in the Mittani period. (The wall, f11, and temple mound were probably built much earlier in the Early Dynastic period.) | [Input File: P918jw2.j]

The northernmost was f78 and the southernmost was f79. They can be see to be about the same elevation as the top extant row of stones in the monumental wall, f11. They could have been used to stablilize the fill behind the wall during construction or their foundations could have been dug into fill layer f34 to serve as a foundation for the southernmost two stones of f72. Regrettably, in order to complete the excavtion on time, they were removed before a full analysis could be done. | [Input File: P918jw2.j]

text description of view | 2005-9-13 | jW | This view, a series of three photographs of the combined west baulks of loci k12, k101, and k11 shows the accumulations and fills on either side of the monumental wall, f11. The purpose is to aid in the understanding of how the temple BA mound behind f11 was constructed and what it looked liked before it was abandoned. Originally we believed that the extensive bakhia layer f50 was the top of the mound in antiquity. However, subsequent layers of fill, f42/f90, f38, and f34 were placed on top of it and sealed again with a layer of bakhia, f83, (only a small part of which survived being eroded by water and wind after abandonment) and a level platform of bricks, f84, whose function is unknown. This photo is a closeup taken just N of the wall, f11. It illustrates the interface of the fill layers f34 and f38 with the wall and the remnants of the brick platform, f84, and bakhia, f83, which formed the top of the temple mound from the time of construction during the Early Dynastic period to as late as the Mittani period. | [Input File: P918jw2.j]

text description of view | 2005-9-15 | jW | This series of photographs constitute the record of the excavated components of the lower portion of the typological column. They illustrate how the wall and mound behind it were built. First the wall stones were laid, then the mound was built up by application of successive layers of compacted fill obtained from various sources in and around the tell. The layers were not uniform in compostion or deposition. Some contained large amounts of ash, while others were relatively clean. The sealing layers of bakhia that follow the slope of the mound indicate that it probably was built over several seasons and may have been built in several phases. | [Input File: P918jw2.j]

text description of view | 2005-9-15 | jW | Subview closeup of the inside (N) face of wall, f11, showing the packing, f80, which is called bakhia locally. Although the picture could have been more sharply focused, one can clearly see the mortar-like bakhia which surrounds the stones of the wall. We believe that the bakhia acted like a permiable membrane to regulate the flow of water through the wall structure without weakening the wall or damining the water behind it. (Bakhia is a mixture of reddish clay and small kernals of limstone.) | [Input File: P918jw2.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-15 | eF | This view, taken about midway through the excavation of locus k13 shows a test trench, f116, which followed the baqaya glacis, f109 from the point of its initial discovery in the far NE corner, south to the baulk between k13 and k12 to see if the baqaya found last year (f50 in k12) was a continuation or a separate layer. Also shown is a large limestone block, f110, and a thin layer of dark soil, f111, that covered parts of the baqaya glacis. The layer was perhaps residue from activities associated with a pit feature, a5 to the west of f111. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-15 | rE | This view is of the north section of locus k21, which will be combined with locus k22 to the north to form locus k108. The features are numbered in a curious way because excavation this season began below the tell surface when an effort in a previous season to find the revetment wall by J2 was stopped due to higher priority needs elsewhere. So the topsoil is f126, while the starting point of the excavation was f98, two layers below. The photo was taken with a wide-angle lens which exhibited considerable distortion at the edges. Even so, the boundary between accumulations f103 and f139 suggest that perhaps there had been a gully along that boundary after abandonment. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-15 | bL | This view, taken soon after excavations began in the lower part of locus k22. We were searching for evidence of the revetment wall, f11. Here we see two large limestone blocks, f124 and f125, imbedded in a very hard layer of packed material, f123. As it turned out, the stones were imbedded in the packing. The stones were elements of a line of stones placed along the line of the revetment wall as it was before it was covered by natural accumulation. The packing was made of mud and formed the surface of the mound that remained until the site was abandoned. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-16 | eDB | This view shows the relationship between features excavated in Season P (f50 in k12) and Season Q (f109 and a4 in k13) in adjacent loci. The baqaya surface, f109, in the northern locus is clearly the same as the baqaya surface, k12 discovered in the first season in the southern locus. The E-W line of limestone blocks, a4, are located well above the baqaya surface and reflect activity much later in time. Although there are many such blocks seemingly randomly located above the baqaya in units J1, J2, and J3 these are unique in that they are at the same elevation and seem to be placed in a line. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-17 | eDB | This photograph documents an important discovery in the excavation. A hard-packed layer of mud (wahal), f123, running E-W and sloping down from N-S is located along the north side of k108. A horizontal surface of what seems to be softer material, f148, runs E-W along the southern part. Sherds within it are flat suggesting that it was used as a walkway. Between the two at differing elevations are large limestone blocks generally oriented E-W. Some were eventually seen to be placed along the line of the revetment wall, f11, after it was covered. Others were seen to be where they were found as a result of natural forces, particularly deterioration of structures higher on the mound. At the time the photo was taken, we did not know which were which. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-17 | eDB | This photograph documents the depositional history of this part of the BA temple mound as seen from the west baulk of k13. Moving in reverse order one sees topsoil, f97, several layers of natural accumulation, f104, f107, f114, f117, overlaying two layers, f120, f121 which follow the slope of the baqaya surface of the original mound, f109. More likely than not these surfaces correspond to the wahal surface, f152, and the layer covering it, f151, in the locus aadjacent to the west, k23. The pit, a5, consists of 3 features; the cut, f128, a top layer of fill, f122, and a bottom layer, f127, which may be the top of the fill for the entire BA temple mound. One can see that the pit was cut into the Early Dynastic period's baqaya layer, f109, was thereafter filled, f122, and later was completely covered by f120, and f121, which we date to the Mittani period. Although no directional or horizontal references are shown, the photo was taken looking west and the pit has a diameter of roughly 100 cm. For reference purposes, two stones, f112, f117, part of a4, are shown. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-17 | eDB | This photograph shows the context of the pit a6 at about the time that it was dug. It is surrounded by accumulation, f151, covering the wahal glacis, f152, into which it was cut. More generally, the lack of other features is significant in that it shows that the BA temple mound continued as a sacred area into Mittani times when the wahal surface was applied over the original Early Dynastic covering, baqaya layer f109. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

general notes on photos | 2007-7-31 | jW | The photograph for this view, planned to be of the section of the east baulk of k13 does not exist. It could have been caused by one of two reasons. First and most likely, about this time a faulty camera memory card caused several photographs to be lost. However, the archaeologist who scheduled the photographs was inexperienced and during a busy time may have used the number to plan for a view whose corresponding photo was never actually taken. | [Input File: R731jW1.j] |

text description of view | 2006-8-17 | bL | This significant record photograph shows the Mittani period surface in k108 (and the subject of v60) after it had been fully excavated. Looking to the north, at the bottom of the photo can be seen a level floor surface, f148, which probably served as a pathway around the extant outer portion of the BA temple mound complex. At the top can be seen the hard-packed wahal surface, f123, which was applied to form a new coating to the mound, perhaps because it had been damaged or had become too difficult to maintain. Between are a number of large limestone blocks, some of which were probably placed as "memory stones" to approximate the location of the revetment wall, f11, which by that time had been covered as the plaza below filled with aeolian soil. Other blocks probably were deposited as a result of natural forces. At the time that the photo was taken, we had not decided which stones were which. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

It sits in an area of natural accumulation, f141. It is particulaly noteworthy because it sits directly above a pit dug into the ancient layer of baqaya, f109, that formed the surface of the Third Millennium BA temple mound. and directly below a burned area in an oval of packed soil. This suggests that this particular point retained some significance throughout the entire Mittani period. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

Second the photo shows clearly the line of large limestone blocks, a4, (consisting of f112, f117, f130, f131, f132) was deposited considerably later in time. The shape of the string, level in the field, shows the distortion introduced by the lens and a tilt away from level by the camera to accommodate the N to S downslope of f123 where the photographer was standing. The limited correspondence of the accumulations is due to inconsistent scoring. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-8-26 | eDB | This photograph shows the section of the east baulk of k13. In addition to the layers of natural accumulation near the surface, one can see clearly the baqaya surface, f109, of the original temple mound built in the Early Dynastic period. Also shown clearly, but not recognized for what it was at the time of excavation, are the deteriorated wahal surface, f120, of the first reconstruction, and the deteriorated packed mud surface, f121, of the second reconstruction, which both covered the baqaya during the Mittani period. The elevation reference string is also shown. (It was level, but was not photographed with the correct orientation.) | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

The excavator equated f184 with f241, a similar surface found in k108. Also shown are a number of large limestone blocks. Four, f185, f186, f187, and f188, form a rough line running SW to NE. text description of view | 2006-8-26 | eDB | This series of three photographs records the west baulks of loci k12, k11, and k101. It was taken to help understand the relationships among the various surfaces which formed the lower part of the BA temple mound and the revetment wall, f11, at various times it was in use. In this view, the northernmost of the three, one can see the baqaya surface, f50, of the mound as it was built in the Early Dynastic period, then a thin layer of gray soil, f90. Above is the first rebuilt wahal glacis, f152, a part of which may have incorporated red brick and baqaya elements. Traces of the second rebuild of the glacis, f241, may be shown on the middle left of the photo. A tannur, f3, used late in the occupation of the tell can be seen in the upper left of the photo. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

Interesting is also the accumulation below the tannur, f3, and above the last glacis, f241. It is about 75 cm thick, uniform in color, and contains a number of sherds, all oriented horizontally. This suggests a working surface where people stood or walked over an extended period of time. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

We began to see some deteriorated brickwork, f215 at the northernmost extent of f152 where the wahal and baqaya seem to merge. Unfortunately, one can see more brickwork in and along the line of the north baulk of k23, but there was not time to excavate it this season. general notes on photos | 2007-8-06 | jW | The photograph for view 95 is missing. The most likely explanation for the missing photograph is that it was scheduled, but never taken by the photographer. Alternatively it could have been taken and mis-identified as belonging to another unit. | [Input File: R805jW.j] |
notes on analogical record | 2007-8-06 | jW | This view was to have been of the east baulk of k109 with the elevation reference string in the photograph. There are drawings of the section, w24, w25, and w26, but apparently no alternative photo. Fortunately, the accumulations were post-occupational, natural ones, with no architecture. In addition, most accumulations extended across the entire locus and appear in the drawings and photos for the west section, w23, w24, and v147. | [Input File: R805jW.j] |

text description of view | 2006-8-31 | bL | Locus k21 was first excavated as part of unit J2 several seasons ago. They were searching for the revetment wall, but the season ended before it was found. It was re-named J3k21 and excavation resumed in MZ19. The limestone blocks, f210, f211, and f212 had been partially excavated and this photo was taken just after excavations resumed. Limestone block f236 is a bit lower in elevation (20 cm), but part of the same depositional pattern. All the limestone blocks sit in natural accumulation, f203 | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

notes on analogical record | 2007-8-08 | jW | View 97 was taken during the excavation of the southern half of k21, a trench partially excavated as a part of J2 several years ago. Five limestone blocks can be seen, only four of which can be positively identified. The block farthest to the north (left) was tentatively designated as f254. Elsewhere, the feature is described as a natural accumulation in which other limestone blocks sit. The large stone is undoubtedly one of many that could not be linked to a specific structure and therefore were removed in the final days of the excavation. Note that they all were assigned feature numbers and measured with relays; we just do not know which particular one this stone was. | [Input File: R808jW.j] |

text description of view | 2006-9-03 | rE | This photograph shows a late stage in the use of the north part of the wahal glacis, f152. A large quantity of soil has covered the lower part of the wahal glacis and has been used as a path or a floor. This can be verified by the levelness of the surface and the fact that the pottery sherds are all oriented horizontally. This floor is at the same elevation (9200) as a nearby tannur and a line of stones, all suggesting that they may have been part of a living space, a7. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]

text description of view | 2006-9-04 | jW | This view shows the section of north baulk of k93, one of four loci aligned E to W and excavated specifically to open sight lines to the revetment wall and the BA temple mound from the south. The photograph illustrates that accumulations up to one meter deep were primarly deposited by wind and water run-off from the mound after abandonment. There are no structures; just a few isolated large limestone blocks. The elevation reference is included in the main view, but not the sub-views. | [Input File: Rx31jW.j]
