Description/Count
description (summary) 2006-8-16 eDB A line of large limestone blocks (f112 = f208, f117 = f206, f130 = f205, f132 = f207) running E-W relatively close to the surface. Their relative positions suggest that they were intentionally placed, possibly as a part of a wall or enclosure. Their proximity to the surface also suggests that they were moved to their current position. It is unclear when they were placed and it could range from the late Mittani period through the Middle Assyrian period which immediately followed, to a much later time associated with scattered occupation. Recovery/Assignment
notes on recovery 2006-8-30 jW We began removing the four E-W stones today. Their pedistal and the soil surface on which the two N-S stones rested (f147) provide an opportunity to collect a ceramic sample to determine if the installation was used during the time after Mittani occupation. We expect that it was probably built by Middle Assyrians because the bottom of the stones was about 15cm above the mud glacis, f152, which was likely kept clean by Mittani temple worshipers. notes on volumetric localization 2006-8-30 jW while plotting relays of the outline of the "L" shaped arrangement of the large limestones and their individual shapes which were excavated in k13 and k23, jW noticed that one of the stones had not been assigned a feature number. Furthermore, it was not possible to positively identify which stones of the E-W line of four were previously designated. We assigned new feature numbers (f205, f206, f207, f208) to the stones and relayed each again. [Input File: Q830jW4.j]

Description/Count
description (summary) 2006-9-19 jW A pit that was cut into the baqaya packing, f109, f50, which covered the temple mound from when it was constructed in the Early Dynastic III period until the middle of the Mittani period. As the packed mud glacis which covered the pit fills and cut was applied atop the baqaya late in the Mittani period, we presume that the pit was cut by those who knew the sacred nature of the temple mound. We can discern no apparent purpose for the pit because the fill was relatively clean. [Input File: Q919jW1.j]

Deposition
notes on deposition 2006-8-21 jW The stratigraphy associated with a pit which has been partially excavated in the NW corner of k13 and which can be clearly analyzed by examining the west baulk. The pit was cut directly into the baqaya glacis of the temple mound, f109. There is no evidence of a cut in the ashy accumulation, f111, (later determined to be part of a packed mud glacis above f109) which covered the baqaya in the entire exposed portion of the locus. In other words, the pit was cut and filled while the glacis was still visible. Afterwards, the entire glacis was covered with the mud packing. [Input File: Q821jW1.j]
2006-8-21 gB We have no apparent cases of intrusion in the glacis or in the natural accumulations above the Plaza until the latest, post-sacral phase (h7JPA). Accordingly, a5 requires special attention. During excavation, the top of the pit was noticed just above the level of the glacis. Since the pit is in the section of k13, it could be determined that indeed it was not cut from above the glacis surface, and that the grey, ashy accumulation found elsewhere directly above the glacis covers it imemdaitely (see v81). There are two possible scenarios to explain this pattern of deposition. (1) It may have been cut in the final era of the Mittani period when natural accumulation had covered the monumental structures (wall, f11; apron, f10; J2 staircase) along the periphery of the temple mound. The location of the pit could have marked the outer limit of the sacral area, which now consisted of the baqaya surface from the pit up to the BA temple. The pit possibly would then have been cut for ceremonial purposes, as a poor memory of earlier cultic activities at the foot of the Temple Terrace. This would date the pit to the very end of phase h6BJPA. (2) Alternatively, the pit could have been dug by Assyrians who displaced the Mittani at Urkesh. To them, the still extant mound would have had no sacred meaning and they could have dug the pit where it was most convenient to them for any one of a variety of purposes. This would date the pit to the very beginning of phase h7JPA. [Input File: Q821jW1.j]

Recovery/Assignment
notes on recovery 2020-8-01 jW At one place in the NE corner of locus k23 there was a succession of at least three distinct special-use features, one atop the other. Starting from the top, near the surface was a hard-packed circle of soil with a burned spot in the middle, f136. Underneath was a circular layer of fist-sized stones in a matrix of mud, f142, at an elevation of about 50cm above the wahal surface, f152, of the Mittani rebuild of the temple mound. On the bottom was pit, a6, which was cut into the baqaya surface, f109, of the original BA temple mound built during the Early Dynastic perion. [Input File: ZE801jWjW.j]
2020-8-01 jW It was inappropriate to link these features as an a aggregate because they are not in the same stratum. Likewise, they are typologically different and cannot be linked as an assemblage. [Input File: ZE801jWjW.j]
2020-8-01 jW Although the congruence of these features is possibly a chance occurrence, that location could also have been ritually important. For example, all three elements are just to the east of some deteriorated mudbrick architecture, f215. Unfortunately, excavation ended before the extent and function of f215 could be determined. As such we can only say that the link among the three features to a continuing ritual is a distinct possibility. [Input File: ZE801jWjW.j]

They are randomly oriented and distributed in depths ranging from a few centimeters to fifty centimeters below the top of f11. Most are located in k109 and the west part of k108. Their source is problematical, although they were most likely displaced from structures located higher to the north on the BA temple mound. There were two clusters of these stones: f40, f48, f85 and f91 in k101; and f289, f290, and f291 in k108. [Input File: R718jW.j]

Deposition
notes on deposition 2006-9-14 jW This collection of a faience pendant and a number of beads were all found within a radius of 50cm. They were all at the same elevation in a matrix consisting of hard-packed laminations containing sherds and small stones. There was no obvious container. The find spot was about 100cm south of the south face of the revetment wall, f11 and about 50cm below its top. Preliminary analysis of the pottery shows that it was Mittani. We conclude from these facts that it is likely that the pendant and beads formed a necklace which was dropped and not retrieved. It must have been quickly covered. The most likel time of deposition was in Stratum 13, Phase 6b in the Mittani period. [Input File: Q914jW.j]

Description/Count
description (summary) 2006-9-19 jW A group of bricks(red) and a brick structure with associated pit abutting a wahal glacis and overlaying a baqaya glacis, f109. The baqaya glacis, f109, was constructed in the Early Dynastic Period as part of the temple BA mound that includes a revetment wall, f11. Eventually the wall was covered with accumulation and a set of memory stones, a16, was placed atop it. A new wahal glacis, f152, was constructed atop at least the lower part of the baqaya glacis to make a smooth transition to the higher elevation of the memory stones. The wahal abutted a line of bricks that ran east to west along the north baulk of k23 and which included a deteriorated structure that may have incorporated a ceremonial pit. [Input File: Q919jW1.j]

Description/Count
description (summary) 2007-7-17 jW A line of 45 large limestone blocks roughly placed in rows oriented east to west that extend the entire width of loci k101, k108, and k109. These were placed approximately along the line of the top of the revetment wall, f11, after the wall had been covered by accumulation during the Mittani period. They were set into the wahal surface of the second glacis, f123, f148, z1. The stones most likely served as a reminder of where the wall had been as the temple continued in use after the original plaza, steps and wall systems were covered. As such they are often called memory stones in our journal entries. [Input File: R718jW.j]

Description/Count
description (summary) 2007-7-17 jW A single line of five large limestone blocks oriented SE to NW along the northeastern corner of k109. Their extent is unknown as they appear to continue into unit J1. They are at the approximate elevation of the third glacis, but they cannot be definitely linked stratigraphically. The orientation of the center blocks, f244 and f246, (rectangular slabs set on the long edge and parallel to one another) suggests that they may have functioned as a doorway, but altertanately, the overall linear orientation suggests that all 5 stones may have functioned as a second set of memory stones in conjunction with a second Mittani rebuild of the glacis and memory stone system. a3. Description/Count
description (summary) 2006-8-12 vVE Aggregate a500 consists of several large boulders (f502, f503, f504, f505, f506, f507, f508, f509 and f510) and a pebble concentration (f511) that lie scattered in a natural accumulation. I consider it as a collapse coming from the second apron to the north of a500. [Input File: Q812vE2.j]
2006-9-19 eI collection of boulders and pebbles that over time rolled down from the 2nd apron [Input File: Q918eI2.j]

Recovery/Assignment
daily notes 2006-8-12 vVE The features that make up a500 had already been exposed in a previous campaign when this locus, J3 k1, was a locus of J2. These features were left standing and the deposits around and/or under it were excavated. I decided on the basis of the same depositional history for all these features and their close vicinity that these features constitute one aggregate, a500. [Input File: Q812vE2.j]
argument 2006-8-12 vVE The distribution of the cluster of stones of a500 is somewhat scattered and seems to slightly descend from the North to the South. These two observations seem to argue that they were dislodged from a stone structure that must have been laying to the north. This could only have been the second apron whose remaining top stones are already visible in k2 or, more precisely, in the older German trench in unit B6. However, the stones of a500 do not seem to lay on the same surface (no surface is in fact apparent) and this argues for the interpretation that the stones were deposited over time and not in a single event. [Input File: Q812vE2.j]

Description/Count
description (summary) 2007-7-21 mO The stepped stone installation in J03, that we call the Second Apron, is the continuation of this structure which was discovered in J02 and J03 ( k101 ). This part of the second apron was assigned the feature number f532. However it has become clear that the part of the second apron in k107 is different from the part in k2. In k107 the stone structure still seems to be stepped while in k2 it obviously is not ( f556 ). [Input File: R721mO.j]
