Moved the elevator in the am to the north side of the unit. The bottom is at the lowest currently excavated level. This will help in the future but was disruptive today since we had not quite finished excavating the column, k106. We also used the small sifter over the funnel of the elevator for a while and this caused a slowdown. We eventually put in the larger sifter at the top of the unit. Had a meeting with all the staff and cH in J2. He discussed the types of stones we have here in Mozan, primarily limestone. -sg meeting in the pm with vS, pC and mS. We were prioritizing the tasks at hand for the rest of the excavation. We also discussed whether we should begin a new column in k24, or whether we will expand the current column. We will ask gB this question tomorrow. We also discussed the possibility of whether the wall, f72 may have different bottom elevations. f164 is the series of flat stones along the lowest point we have of the wall in the west. We have been referring to it as a foundation or footing and wonder if this may be the case. We will talk to gB about this also tomorrow. gB suggested we remove the floating stones running perpendicular to k106 and 72. We will insure they are relayed and photographed and remove them as soon as possible. -wk fAB took two pickmen, Sa'ud and Mas'ud to work in J2. We now have three pickmen with three teams. It's unfortunate to lose these two excellent pickment but our excavation area is decreasing and we really did not have room for all the pickmen. k 106 dy Examined the accumulation we began uncovering yesterday and have decided to give it a new number, f184. pC believes the inclusions are of a different nature from f181 above it. vS thinks it is the same accumulation and also the same as the accumulation in front of the wall, and adjacent to k106, f151. We declared a new feature nonetheless although it might be the same as these two because this is where we may have the transition from Mitanni to 3rd Millennium and are watching all differences carefully. We have reached the current planned depth of k106 and have stopped excavating here. The elevation is 8800. pC and vS completed the east and north sections and we took photos, v95 and v96. k 24 dy Continued going down here with no change in accumulation. Began taking down the west baulk. k 13 dy Contnued going down here with no change in accumulation. f 184 ds brown soil with several charcoal or carbon inclusions and white inclusions, possibly phytoliths. May be the same accumulation as f181 above it, or f151 to the north but have declared a different feature because this is where we may have the transition from Mitanni to 3rd Millennium and are watching all differences carefully. .rd P827 .ri mS -sf cVP has left the excavation and mS has returned as #1 for the rest of the season. pC and vS will continue to work in the unit. -dy excavation continued in k14, k24 and k106. As we go deeper in the loci it is getting more difficult to remove the dirt even with the elevator. vS and pC are drew the east section of k106 so we can begin coming down in k24. -lb per gB we are collecting the sherds from the dirt that is being collected by the elevator. We are labeling it f0 and defining the q-lots in the q-log notes. This process began on P824 with the recovery of a bronze object, q463.1. -eq had a discussion with gB, fAB, pC, vS and mS on how best to remove the dirt now that we are getting lower and lower in each of the loci. We will move the elevator after work to the north section over the stones of the wall, f72. k 106 dy we continue to go down in the column. pC believes the inclusions in the accumulation are changing and that there are more carbon and phytolith inclusions. We will clean this well tomorrow and look more closely to see if there is any change. Two items were uncovered in the eastern quadrant near the floating stones. i24 is a piece of bronze and i25 is a small piece of gold, a possible bead, see v93. k 24 dy continued going down with no differentiation in accumulation f163. k 14 dy continued going down with no differentiation in accumulation f183. .rd P829 .ri mS -sf pC spent the morning after breakfast in the house working on objects. vS and mS remained in the field. -dy opened k109 and k110. k109 is in the western portion of the area and contains portions of k23 and k22. k110 is in the eastern section of the area and conatins portions of k14 and k24. f171 continues as the feature number in k109, f163 continues as the feature number in k110. No new developments or strategies. Took photos of floating stones in k9, f165.8, f167 and f167.1, and f185 in k110. f185 is away from the other three and definitely floating. The other three are random and floating. Although they do appear to be connected to the wall purposefully, they are more highly founded than any possible footing and were in Mitanni accumulation. We will remove these stones this week. k 9 dy photographed floating stones f165.8, f167 and 167.1. Although they do appear to be connected to the wall purposefully, they are more highly founded than any possible footing and were in Mitanni accumulation. We will remove these stones this week. k 110 dy declared this locus and began excavation here today. This is part of k14 and k24. Continued using f163. It was hard and very compacted and slow going today. Took photograph of f185 a floating stone. It does not appear to be connected purposefully to the wall in any way. It was relayed and will be removed this week. f 185 ds a floating stone. It does not appear to be connected purposefully to the wall, f72 in any way. k 109 dy declared this locus and began excavation here today. This is part of k22. We continue with the feature f171 which is brown and soft in this area. Have not reached the compact material yet. No outstanding characteristics. k 108 dy contined going down here. When drawing the n section of k106 which is adjacent to this locus, vS and pC noticed the cut of a small pit, f187. We missed the cut and the other half of the pit in k106. We removed the fill, f186. The fill was similar to the surrounding accumulation and may have been a natural depression rather than manmade. We also uncovered a small piece of gold foil in this locus but no other outstanding items. f 187 ds small pit seen in section of k106 and continuing in k108. the fill, f186 is similar to the surrounding accumulation and may have been a natural depression rather than manmade. tc cu f151 f 186 ds fill of pit f187. The material in the fill is similar to the surrounding accumulation and may have been a natural depression rather than manmade. tc si f187 .rd P831 .ri mS -el no excavation on P830. We attended the funeral of Prof. Paolo Emilio Pecorella of Tell Barri. -sf had Ahmad the shovelman begin using the pick to help with the extremely hard loci. -sg meeting in the am with gB, mKB, fAB, pC, vS and mS to discuss plans for the rest of the excavation season. We will cease excavation in k108 and k109 after bringing both to the same elevation. We have not found anything, nor do we expect to find anything in these two loci and will focus excavations to the east and utilize our manpower most effectively. We will focus on what is currently k110 and make the western extent of the excavation about one meter west of the baulk of k14. This is also just to the west of the large floating stones, f167 and f166.8. We will designate all the excavation area as the column and flag all lots. We will also go down in front of the wall in k10. Finally we will start making the oblique baulks. -dy finished excavations in k108 and k109, two unremarkable loci. They are at the same elevation and we will move the focus of excavations to the east. Also removed the large floating stones, f165.8, f167 and f167.1. This is a major change and will open up k10 and the view of the wall f72 in this area. We will also have a better look in section to see the footing of the line of stones, f164 k 109 dy went down a few centimeters here today and evened out the area. We will cease excavations here for the season. This is a totally unremarkable locus with no outstanding characteristics. This locus is adjacent to k108 and we have finished at the same elevations. k 108 dy we have reached the extremely hard material in this locus and the going has been very slow. Ceased excavations here however. This also was an unremarkable locus and followed the pattern of the other loci dug both this season and in past seasons. This locus is adjacent to k109 and we have finished at the same elevations. vS and pC drew the east baulk. We will now remove it to leave this locus at a uniform elevation. k 110 dy continued excavations here. Declared f188 which are two large stones on the northern edge of this locus. We have called this a feature because there is the possibility they may be linked to the line of stones running east-west in k23 and along the northern edge of k106, although this is unclear at the moment. This is one question we hope to answer with focused excavation in this area. f 188 ;df st ds two large stones on the northern edge of k110. We have called this a feature because there is the possibility they may be linked to the line of stones running east-west in k23 and along the northern edge of k106, although this is unclear at the moment. k 10 dy we removed the large floating stones here, f165.8, f167 and f167.1. These are highly founded and we presume not related to the footing along the wall to the west, f164. f165.8 is a part of the floating stones which were mostly removed on P822. f167 and f167.1 are two stones which were never considered part of the presumed buttress. Although these three stones run north-south and seem like a boundary between f107 and the lack of stones in k10 to the east, they are highly founded and presumed not related. We began to remove the accumulation under these stones and called it f166 which was the accumulation feature number given to the floating stones of f165. vS noticed that this accumulation was browner than f166 and resembled f156 brown accumulation or f158, bricky packing along the wall f72 to the west. We will look more closely in the morning. f 167 ;df st ds an extremely large floating stone in k10. Originally thought to be part of wall fall or a buttress of f72, the wall, it is more highly founded and presumed unrelated. It is part of a line of three stones, including f165.8 and f167.1 that seem to form a boundary between f107 and the lack of stones in k10 to the east, they are also highly founded and presumed not related as well. ;f 167.1 ;df st ;ds a large floating stone in k10.
