Organized into 5 teams with one relay assistant. -sf gm, jw, dc, and jo all worked in the field, co-ordinating a large number of diverse activities in the unit. -sn jw drew sections for the north and east baulks of k22, where the string was aligned by the laser level and the elevation was m3653+85-150=8303cm. He began to draw the east baulk of k3, where the string was aligned by the laser level and the elevation was m3656+85-150=8276cm. k 3 dy Detailed ournal for this square being written by dc, who supervised the work there. Removed layer, f287, from the SE quadrant and uncovered a large, cut stone with a square top, f289, which was aligned with the palace walls and at an appropriate elevation to have a functional purpose, whose revelation unfortunately must await next year's excavations. k 4 dy Continued to excavate living accumulation, f278, covering pise floor, f213. We are still finding a number of sherds from jars that may be partially restorable. We anticipate that it will take several more days to clear f213. k 14 dy Began to remove the east baulk. k 21 dy Removed topsoil, f282, and accumlation underneath, f291. Under f291, accumlations differed north and south. To the south was a clean, reddish, bricky material, accumulation, f293. To the north was a grayish, ashy accumulation, f294. k 11 dy began to excavate carefully accumlations f134 and f124, designated in the MZ16 season. Uncovered a patch of soil covered with deteriorated reed matting, f292, in the NW quadrant and the top of a course of bricks, f295, in the middle near the north baulk. f 134 df ad ds Designated in MZ16 as natural accumulation under topsoil, f131, in the southern extension of k11. Contained many small rocks. tc co f297 tc co f298 f 124 df ad ds Designated in MZ16 as grayish red accumulation along the northern baulk of k11. tc co f292 tc co f295 f 289 df st-is ds large cut stone with a square top which is surrounded by layer, f287, in the SE quadrant of k3. It is aligned with the AK building walls, but its function or connection with that building is unknown. f 290 df a ds soft layer of accumulation in all of k3 and which surrounds the large stone, f287. Covered by f287 in the SE quadrant. Contains patches of ashy soil which have not been separately designated as features. f 291 df a ds accumulation under topsoil, f282, in locus k21, which extends about 250cm to the east of the eastern boundary of k22 to the entrance stonework of the abi. tc co f293 tc co f294 f 292 df ly ds Patches of the white residue from deteriorated reed matting in the NW quadrant of k21. tc si f124 f 293 df ac ds Red, bricky accumulation below accumulation, f291, in the south half of k11. tc ov f296 f 294 df ac ds Soft, ashy accumulation below accumulation, f291 in the north half of k11. tc ov f296 f 295 df ly ds A layer of bricks laid flat along the center portion of the north baulk of k11. Unfortunately, time does not permit us to explore this feature, and therefore its definition and function must be determined next season.
